As
NESPAK is preparing for its 40th birthday in 2013, looking back into
the past, particularly the previous year, is a refreshing thought, a
time to reflect, to ponder over the years gone by. NESPAK's name is
synonymous with struggle and hard work and the last year was no
exception. NESPAK, which has become the largest consultancy firm
among the developing nations with the passage of time, has done a
great job by means of its professional expertise and technical
knowledge. The Company is marching ahead with confidence and
credibility that it has earned through its multi-faceted operations
and experience during the last 40 years.
During the fiscal year 2011-2012, NESPAK recorded an unprecedented
progress by acquiring large development projects in public and
private sectors both at home and abroad. The Company secured a total
of 107 projects costing
Rs.
518 billion in and outside Pakistan. Our domestic and overseas
business acquisition owes much to NESPAK's proven track-record and
aggressive business development strategy.
NESPAK did extremely well in terms of financial growth and
contracted a 20 percent increase in its fee for the current
financial year, which is more than that of the last year's. Most
prominent among the 84 local projects include Metro Bus System and
Flyover at Canal Crossing/Wahdat Road, Lahore, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Emergency Rural Roads Rehabilitation Project, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed
Hospital Peshawar, 840 MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project, Munda Dam
Project, Water Supply and Sewerage Scheme Multan City -- Part-II,
and Remodelling of Warsak Canal System in Peshawar and Nowshera
Districts. NESPAK also had the brilliant chance to clinch the first
USAID project in the Water Resources Development Sector namely
“Verification of Milestones of Gomal Zam Irrigation Scheme.”
Overseas, NESPAK performance was marked with distinction and
excellence. Despite stiff competition in the engineering consultancy
market, NESPAK was able to make a breakthrough internationally, in
countries like the Republic of Yemen and the Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan where it obtained projects in the fields of fisheries
ports and water management for the first time. In the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia, NESPAK won a power project in an international design
competition while in the State of Qatar, various architectural
projects including the Pakistan Embassy project were the highlights
of the year. NESPAK acquired and completed a number of projects in
the Sultanate of Oman, particularly in the road and environment
sectors. In addition to that, the Company remained actively involved
in rendering consultancy services for ongoing projects in the
countries mentioned above. Almost 30 percent of NESPAK's total
revenue comes from its overseas offices/projects. This by no means
is a big accomplishment of NESPAK.
Apart
from making efforts to generate income and enhance revenue for the
Company itself, NESPAK has always contributed and continues to play
a major role in Pakistan's progress and development. At the national
level, NESPAK deserves kudos for providing services for disputed
water projects between Pakistan and India, including the Kishanganga
Dam. Moreover, services of one of our top professionals were
solicited by the Government of Pakistan for appointment as the Indus
Water Commissioner. NESPAK has only recently completed its services
on the Mangla Dam Raising Project which will help ward off the
impact of the persistent energy crisis in the country.
At
the home front, NESPAK has planned to build a NESPAK Foundation
House which will not only accommodate various project offices and
save money being paid as rent but also generate revenue from the
rentable space. Another good thing happened to NESPAK during the
year was the completion and inauguration of NESPAK House in
Islamabad, where it now has a prestigious address and edifice.
NESPAK firmly believes in enhancing its technical and professional
expertise according to the specific needs of the Company. Keeping in
view staff shortage and to streamline its operations, NESPAK
inducted a number of young engineers and professionals to be groomed
for future responsibilities. Currently, the total staff strength of
NESPAK stands at 4195.
Much
attention is paid to training programmes to enhance professional
competence at NESPAK. During the year, 84 professional and
management training programmes were arranged in Lahore, Karachi and
Islamabad, wherein 647 professionals of NESPAK attended technical
lectures in the field of managerial and support competencies and
Information Technology. Professionals were sent to foreign countries
to acquire know-how of the latest trends in water resources
management, energy, environment management, landslide risk
management etc. Various student internship programmes, briefings and
presentations were also organised during the year.
Quality and profitability go hand in hand and it has always remained
a guiding principle of NESPAK. We are passionate about not taking
success for granted in this age of
super-competition. During the year, Internal Quality Audits under
the Annual Internal Quality Audit Programme were carried out on
design and construction management related activities to ensure
compliance with the Quality Management System. Quality Steering
Committee meetings are held to discuss steps to improve our quality
system.
The
bi-yearly external surveillance audits were carried out by the Lead
Auditor of Moody International in NESPAK Divisions/Offices at
Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi to check compliance with the
requirements of the ISO 9001: 2008 Standard. One of these was a
detailed re-assessment audit in June 2012 at NESPAK Lahore and
Islamabad for the renewal of the registration certificate, after
which a certificate with three years validity was issued to the
Company.
Keeping alive to its traditions with a vast reservoir of
professional capabilities, proficiency and technical expertise,
NESPAK intends to boost its efforts to bring new business both in
Pakistan and overseas. Insha Allah, we will enter the 41th year
with a new vigour and verve to win and maintain the confidence of
our clients and business partners whom we consider a valuable asset
for
the
Company.
May
Allah help us in our resolve to move forward to take Pakistan ahead
and excel in all our endeavours and ventures! Amen.
